In this lesson we will learn a basic Boogie pattern which can be used in many piano songs. I use a piano Booie at the beginning of any show I am doing. Boogie piano is a great opener for a singer. It also can be used on many songs which are often not thought of as Boogie songs. The piano player who is doing a show which might be several hours long will need to have lots of different rhythms to keep the mood fresh. Boogie is often used by piano players for Rock and Roll songs and Country tunes and old standards. If the piano show is taking place at a party, the Boogie piano intro will help get things started in a lively style. As you become familiar with the C Chord piano Boogie in the key of C shown in the above video, try other Boogie riffs in different keys. You can do a piano Boogie in any key. Try using a left hand pattern of C-E-G-A-Bb as shown in the video and occasionally try using a different left hand piano Boogie riff of C-E-A-G and repeat that. The piano Boogie in the key of C, begins with one finger of the left hand playing the low piano notes, C-E-G-A-Bb (B Flat) and the same notes in reverse, Bb-A-G-E-C. After each left hand note on the piano, the right hand plays a right hand C Chord on the upper register of the piano. The video above shows the progression. Boogie has been a part of music in general and piano music in particular since the early part of the 20th Century. It was the backbone of many of the big band numbers and it was used extensively during Rock and Roll's earliest days of the 1940s and 1950s. The piano playing of Jack Fina was like a preview of what was around the corner with the piano sounds of Fats Domino, Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis. In the Country music arena, Del Wood's version of Down Yonder had people's feet bouncing in a Rock and Roll tempo before the term became widely used. Your piano style might be the dawn of a whole new musical trend. The piano is an old instrument but it is as new as today's music. The Boogie is one of the most happy piano sounds. You will enjoy learning piano Boogie and playing piano Boogie. Have fun with the piano. |
